DEPARTMENT OF Chemistry PROFILE

DEPARTMENT OF  CHEMISTRY

           ESTABLISHED : 1969

  • The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1969 in the month of August for the academic year 1969-1970.
  • From 1984 onwards the S.G.S Arts College with all the departments were started at a new building which was located nearby Srinivasa Kalyana Mandapam, AP Southern Regional Electrical Office.
  • The new building was opened by Gnani Zail Singh, the president of India in the year 1987.

Overview

  • The chemistry Department is outstanding at Sri Govindharaja Swamy Arts College because  our target is on fundamental research & teaching on synthesis of drugs and Analysis of Compounds by quantitative & qualitative approaches.
  • We bring awareness to the students by conducting practicals in green methods avoiding corrosive, explosive and hazardous chemicals thereby protecting environment.
  • Students are trained in handling different instruments like colorimeter ,pH meter, conductometer, potentiometer etc.,
  •  Students are provided with ample knowledge of highly advanced research techniques of chromatography (TLC, HPLC) and spectroscopy (UV-Visible, NMR, IR and MASS).
  • We offer a B.Sc PROGRAMME with different combinations of chemistry groups MPC, MZC, BBC & CBZ .
  • We are dedicated to develop ethics of institution, practices and relations that constitute public life and modes of inquiry that promote citizenship.

Vision

  • The Chemistry Department inculcates quality education in the field of chemical sciences with both theoretical and technical knowledge enabling the students to explore themselves to serve the society and nation with required global standards.
  • The Chemistry Departmentis to produce graduates with higher academic potential by creating an environment of independent thought and high ethical standards, development of innovative instructional techniques and also committed to integrity for lifelong learning by widening the knowledge. Therefore all-round development of students is the vision of chemistry department.

Values

  • To provide an in-depth knowledge in understanding the basic concepts of chemical sciences and enable them with the tools needed for practice in organizing chemical information.
  • To expose the students to a breadth of experimental techniques using modern instrumentation by learning the laboratory skills needed to design, safely conduct and interpret chemical research.
  • To expertise in the inter-disciplinary nature of chemistry and to integrate knowledge of mathematics, physics and other disciplines to a wide variety of chemical problems.
  • To develop the ability to effectively communicate the scientific information and research results in written and oral formats.
  • To excel in professionalism, including the ability to work in teams and apply basic ethical principles.

  7. National /international seminar/ workshops and Guest Lectures are conducted at regular intervals.

Weaknesses

  • The failure on the part of the college to recruit the sufficient staff to the department.
  • Lack of awareness of students towards higher education
Opportunities

Chemistry degree provides opportunities for a wide verity of jobs in different fields including Science, Research, Business and Health Care. Government and private sectors that offer jobs for B.Sc. Chemistry Students include

  • Chemical Labs
  • Clinical Labs
  • Health Care Industry
  • Cosmetics and perfume Industry
  • Fertilizer Plants
  • Forensic Labs
  • Energy firms
  • Pharmaceutical labs
Challenges

  • Students projects with the collaboration industry
  • To increase campus Placements in various industrial organizations
  • Introducing virtual lab to adopt green technology
  • The placement of the output in different government and non-government sectors, self-employment is one of the main challenges before the department
  • To increase scientific temper among students
  • To cultivate and initiate students for higher education at international repute.
Future Plans
