Overview

The Department of English came into existence in 1969 along with the college. Run by world’s famous charitable and spiritual organization TTD, Sri Govindaraja Swamy Arts College is one of the oldest and most popular degree colleges in temple city of Tirupati.

Since Language- English is a compulsory subject for the students, all the streams, BA, B.Sc,B.Com have to go through a course in English for four Semesters. The Department of English provides specialized knowledge and training in British Literature, American Literature, and New Literatures in English, Comparative Literatures, Linguistics, ELT and Indian English. It also seeks to develop, through teaching of language and literature, sensitivity to human and social values. The Communicative Skill programme addresses the problems students have with close reading, writing, listening and speaking English. In addition to this, students are also trained in soft skills required by them when they face interviews and get into jobs. This programme has now included in many areas where students require facing competitive exams like logical reasoning, improving vocabulary etc. More than passing on information, classroom teaching focuses on enabling the students to express their ideas and relate to the canonical texts in both theory and everyday life. Grammar teaching has also been made more application oriented. Through this methodology, we have been able to encourage students to be more creative in writing. The use of pictures, advertisements and newspapers further makes teaching and learning a pleasure.

The Department of English offers a wide range of literary texts from across times and spatial locations. Classrooms are spaces where students express their views on prevailing societal issues. They critically engage with texts, literary traditions and historical narratives. The Department conducts courses across disciplines as varied as Biochemistry, Economics, Commerce, History, Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Political Science. Various English papers offered enhance language proficiency, understanding of textual intricacies and awareness about contemporary socio-political debates. Seminars, debates, elocution, essay writing and quiz programs in English are regularly conducted in college as part of curriculum.
