The saga of Sri Govindaraja Swamy Arts College began in 1969 with a vision to provide a distinct environment of excellence in education with human values and social commitment. The institution came into existence because of determined efforts of the benevolent management of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams to satisfy the increasing demand for higher education for students who hail from rural areas of backward Rayalaseema. Thanks are due to the generous support provided by the then Government of Andhra Pradesh and Sri Venkateswara University. The college had begun on 4-9-1969 temporarily in S.V.High School building with necessary infrastructure, laboratory equipment, and library facility provided by munificent TTD Management with its own funding. Sri P.V.NarasimhaRao, the then hon’ble minister for Higher Education of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated the college on 28-11-1969. To start with, the institutional strength was 763. In 1972, BSC course was introduced with almost all combinations and the institution became a full- fledged degree college offering B.A, B.Com and BSc courses.
In another generous move, the TTD had constructed a magnificent new building and the college was shifted to the new building on 6-4-1987. Sri GnaniZail Singh, the then hon’ble president of India and Sri Dr.N.T.RamaRao, the then hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated the new building. The institution is sprawled over 17 acres with a well-planned and beautiful college building attached with 3 hostel blocks of residence for men which enrich campus life and contribute to its rich diversity. The sprawling sport fields, lush green garden landscape and the cultural ambience of the college provide inspiration towards students’ personality and their all-round development.
The college comprises nearly 32 classrooms. Apart from classrooms, it comprises laboratories of various departments like Botany, Bio-Technology, Micro-Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Catering Tourism and Hotel Management (CTHM), Physics, Commerce, Zoology. In addition, it also consists of a digitalized library, a Physical Director Department, an open auditorium, IQAC room, NSS &NCC rooms, a Meeting Hall, Examination Chamber and office.
The college now has 19 departments including the self- financial stream that was started in 2004. Presently the college houses over 1600 students, 30% being girl students. Co-education was introduced in 2007. Nearly 960 inmates are residing in hostel blocks. The CBCS was introduced in 2016.
The college is affiliated to Sri Venkateswara University and is also approved under section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act 1956. It is also recognised as a Private Grant-in Aid institution by the government of Andhra Pradesh. The institution has been catering to all sections of society on need based quality education offering B.A, BCOM and BSc courses along with two research programs in Physics and Telugu. Above all, the TTD introduced a free meal scheme for all hostel inmates who come under below poverty line (BPL), probably, the only management that is offering a unique scheme like this elsewhere in the state.
