Overview
  • The department of zoology has been handling zoology for B.Sc as under graduate level from the year of establishment since 1969 along with the college run by girls famous charitable and spiritual organization TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams). Sri Govindaraja Swamy Arts College is one of the oldest and most popular degree colleges in temple city of the Tirupati.

  • The department is handling regular field trips as part of the curriculum so as to expose the student to natural and realist environment.

  • The department has well qualified and highly experienced permanent faculty members, who constantly thrive for academic excellence and dissemination of knowledge to the student’s community.
  • The faculty is active in its research endeavours and Is resource persons to different colleges. The faculty participated in many seminar roles also.
  • The department as well-equipped lab with LCD for regular class presentations with interactive facility.
  • The department is rich with good number of specimens with well-established museum keeper, zoology.
  • As our college is very near to SV university, our faculty members Have attended many offline and online seminars to upgrade the knowledge in various fields in us university and outside universities also.
  • Regular research papers are published from the faculty members which speaks about the research activities from the department. The students drop out is very less. Majority of the students opt for higher studies in various reputed institutions and other universities.
  • Many students qualify themselves in different competitive exams conducted by the private and government organizations. Few students qualify themselves in job drives conducted by the JKC placement cell.

  • The two faculty members Dr. Doraswamy Reddy & Dr. Bhaskar Harinath have done their Ph.D., and research thesis work in our department and awarded Ph.D.,
  • ManavallaRamanujam Research centre in zoology was established and affiliated to S V University in period 1969 to 2000, under the supervision of Dr.V.Chandrasekar.,the zoology department faculty members acted as guides and awarded Ph.D.,
  • Dr. N. Sreeramulu has acted as NCC officer also along with departmental activities. The others have also contributed much for the welfare of the department. Under the influence of above eminent persons many students were attracted towards teaching profession who are now working in various institutions.
  • The department has introduced job-oriented courses like biotechnology and microbiology in the college. By that many students were placed after their completion of course working in different labs of private and public sector. The technical courses design for the student to target themselves into private organisations such as SVIMS etc.,

Outside the Classroom:
  • To improve academic excellence by providing high through put to laboratories with the support of various funding agencies. To develop industry- institutions collaborations / interaction to institute self-employment in Sericulture, Vermiculture, Aquaculture and Apiculture.
  • To take students regularly to field trips and different aquaculture centres to expose knowledge to them. Already our college has industry-institutional collaboration with many industries.
Teaching methods adopted to improve student learning
  • The method adopted by the faculty is lecture method for teaching
  • To make teaching more effective charts, models, OHP sheets, PPT, Video Lessons etc., are used.
  • In case of necessary students are taken to laboratory for experimental demonstration and using ICT method for better understanding of the subject.
  • The practical class which is of two hours duration is divided into two parts. First hour is allotted for the experimental demonstration and the second hour for individual performance of experiments and note down the observations
  • The academic standards of the students are accessed by periodical conduct of oral, slip test and internal examinations.
  • The knowledge, understanding of the student tis evaluated by conducting quiz, seminars, group discussions etc.,
  • Slow learns are identified and their standards are improved by supplying the notes, repeating the lessons and personal attention.
  • Some theory part which is otherwise hard to understand are explained in an easy manner while giving a demonstration in easy manner by doing in the practical class.
  • Apart from having a huge library in the college, the department exclusively has a library with many numbers of books along with digital books(E-books)
  • These books lent to the students which will be an additional benefit to the students
  • The teachers on their part update their knowledge by referring Journals, reference books, participating in seminars, refresher courses and using internet facilities.
  • The students are advised to use the reading room and sectional library in their spare time, as frequently as possible.
  • Periodical counselling of the students is carried out so that they can clear off their doubts.
  • Students are guided to prepare some mini projects.

Details of Infrastructural Facilities
  • Department of Zoology consists of two well equipped labs catering to the needs of the students

Lab-1:It is utilized for both class and lab work by necessity as we are having other classrooms also in the college allotted for the department.

Lab-2: It is also utilized in same manner as previous.


  • In addition to these labs there is one well-furnished staff room, one separate room for HOD, storeroom. Their a Personal Computer available for both students and Faculty members at the staff room with printer.
  • At present the student strength is 100,45,50 in first, second, third year respectively
  • Total workload of the department is 72 Hours per week and the faculty one permanent and other under contract faculty to share these workloads.
  • To assist smooth functioning of the department there is a museum keeper, lab assistant and attender.


Museum: the department of Zoology has around 200 specimens, 100 slides of different species /organs/body parts and 10 lifecycles of different organisms.

  • The Zoological museum has a remarkable collection of invertebrate specimens like coelenterate, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Amphibia, Reptilia, Pisces and mammals from among the vertebrates.
  • Some models of different organisms are also present in the museum.
SWOC analysis of the department and Future plans:
  • SGS arts college is running various groups in undergraduate levelto the students with intake of 50 students in each group with English medium. In science stream CBZ, MZC groups are functional in this college.
  • Strengths


Infrastructural facilities like classrooms and labs are fully equipped with high standard to meet the requirements of students. Each lab is having capacity to accommodate more than 50 students to conduct practical. Efficient, sincere and hard-working faculty members with requisite qualifications are the asset of college.it is proud say that the department of zoology is achieving best results every year in the university examinations.

  • Weaknesses


Existing staff is purely insufficient to meet the strength as per the UGC norms. It leads to decrease the quality in teaching as it is inconvenience for each lecturer to take classes more than allotted regularly. Eventually the expected outcome is difficult as well as students may lose the good opportunities in future. Lack of sufficient laboratory assistances staff, practical manner.


  • Opportunities


Students are very hard working and sincere so that the department is having better meritorious achievements. with teachers’ talents in arranging various camps to uplift the students’ knowledge in aquaculture, microbial activities help the students to improve their capabilities and to develop better overall performance. With infrastructural facilities quality research can be carried out by students and teachers.

  • Challenges


To promote and hard work and uplift the scholastic capacities of students through appropriate motivation is a major challenge. To cultivate innovative thinking capabilities and research aptitude among the UG students is yet another challenge.

To develop interdisciplinary, add on courses. To intensify research activity in the department.
